Event Charging with Unit Reservation (ECUR)

As telecom messaging services continue to evolve, operators require online charging mechanisms that provide greater flexibility while maintaining compliance with industry standards. Event Charging with Unit Reservation (ECUR) introduces a reservation-based charging model that enhances how online charging is managed throughout the service delivery lifecycle.

Unlike traditional Immediate Event Charging (IEC), ECUR reserves subscriber credit before message delivery and completes the charging transaction only after the final delivery outcome is confirmed. This approach enables operators to support more flexible charging workflows while preserving accurate charging throughout the messaging process.

The proposed implementation allows ECUR to coexist with existing IEC deployments, enabling operators to configure charging behavior based on individual routing requirements without disrupting current network operations. The implementation also supports independent ECUR transactions for retry and alternative routing scenarios by creating a new Diameter session for each delivery attempt, maintaining charging integrity across the entire service lifecycle.

As operators continue modernizing messaging infrastructure, standards-based charging models such as ECUR provide a practical approach to improving operational flexibility while supporting evolving Diameter Ro charging requirements.
