The Rise of Network APIs: Why Telecom Networks Are Becoming Programmable

Telecom networks have always contained valuable capabilities—from subscriber identity and authentication to location, connectivity, and quality of service.

Historically, however, accessing these capabilities required specialised telecom integrations and knowledge of protocols such as SS7, MAP, and Diameter.

Network APIs are changing that model.

Network APIs provide a modern interface through which applications, enterprises, and digital platforms can access selected capabilities of mobile networks. Instead of requiring every application developer to understand telecom signalling, network capabilities can increasingly be exposed through standardised APIs.

The industry is building a common ecosystem around GSMA Open Gateway and CAMARA, with operators, technology providers, aggregators, and developers working toward more interoperable Network APIs. GSMA describes Network APIs as a way to make mobile-network capabilities accessible through standardised interfaces, including capabilities related to identity, location, and quality of service.

From Connectivity to Programmable Network Services

The significance of Network APIs goes beyond simply providing another interface.

Traditionally, mobile networks were largely consumed through telecom-specific systems. Applications often depended on intermediaries, proprietary interfaces, or complex integrations to access network capabilities.

The Network API model introduces another layer:

Application → API → Network Capability

This allows capabilities already available within an operator’s infrastructure to become services that applications can consume through modern interfaces.

Why Standardisation Matters

One of the biggest challenges for Network APIs is interoperability.

If every operator exposes a network capability differently, an enterprise wanting to deploy across multiple markets still faces multiple integrations.

This is where GSMA Open Gateway and CAMARA become important.

CAMARA is an open-source project within the Linux Foundation focused on defining, developing, and testing standardised APIs for accessing telecom network capabilities. It works closely with the GSMA Operator Platform Group to align API requirements and definitions.

GSMA Open Gateway provides the broader industry framework for making these standardised network capabilities available through mobile operators.

The objective is straightforward:

Standardise the API experience while allowing operators to retain their underlying network infrastructure.

This approach is already moving beyond experimentation. In March 2026, GSMA reported that 86 operator groups representing more than 300 networks and 80% of global mobile connections were aligned around a common API framework, with more than 60 channel partners involved in commercialising Network APIs.

The Network API Gateway: Connecting APIs to Telecom Signalling

Standardised APIs solve the northbound application-interface challenge. They do not, by themselves, remove the complexity of the network underneath.

An operator may still have infrastructure based on technologies such as SS7/MAP, SIGTRAN, and Diameter, together with HLR/AuC and 3GPP AAA environments.

This is where a Network API Gateway becomes an important architectural component.

For operators, the opportunity is to turn existing network capabilities into programmable services.

For enterprises, Network APIs can provide new sources of trusted network intelligence.

For developers, they offer a simpler way to consume telecom capabilities without requiring deep knowledge of underlying signalling technologies.

And for infrastructure providers, the challenge is to connect the standardised API world with the complex signalling environment that already exists.

That is the role of the Network API Gateway: making the network programmable without requiring the network to be rebuilt.
